Might the Republicans Actually Stand up to President Bush?

By Jonathan Simeone

It appears that several Republicans may actually be willing to stand up to President Bush on something. For months, the president has been threatening to veto legislation that would expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program. But after lawmakers reached a bipartisan compromise on how to renew the program’s authority and increase coverage under it several Republicans are promising to help override the President’s veto. It is expected that there will be enough Republican support to get around the president’s expected veto in the Senate, but it is unclear if enough Republicans in the House will support our children. It is nice to see that some Republicans believe that providing health care to some of our nation’s children living in poverty is as important as paying the Maliki government to go on vacation.
