The government of Pakistan has officially canceled its controversial “peace” agreement with the Taliban. At the same time, the government announced that more troops would be sent to the Swat Valley to battle Taliban forces.
The government of Pakistan deserves credit for finally recognizing that there will be no peace as long as the Taliban is allowed to continue being a strong presence in the country. I have little confidence that the Pakistani military will be able to defeat the Taliban on its own, but at least it is now engaged in the fight. Now, it is time for the West to make plans to start serious diplomatic efforts in the nation. Providing services to the people of Pakistan will do more to decrease the Taliban’s membership than any military campaign launched by the Pakistani government.
